It's looking like since hardware started dropping a little in price, they'll force us to buy entirely new systems when all we need is a new harddrive! Is your old hard drive still usable at all? Can you put it back into the computer and boot into Windows? If so then you can use the XP Product Key Finder utility

ms product key question....
As I already have a full retail copy of XP Pro I don't need any of the disks etc to install XP Pro but what I do need is a new COA and key so as to be legal, Can I just buy a new COA and Key from M$ or whoever Nope - you can't buy a COA (Certificate Of Authenticity), which is the bit with the Product Key on it

Will I need a new product key?
I can get to the screen where it asks for a product key, but I don't know where the disc or original product key is, and can't get past this screen. I have searched all over the Microsoft website and can't find a number to call to obtain a new key. Anybody?

I do have a product ID though - can anyone tell me of any way to find out what my product key number is??!! (It isn't on the outside of the hard drive tower). Or will I need new copy of windows? Please please help - MS support refers me to OEM and OEM site refers me to MS support!

Do the activation, do the registration, so they have your name, etc. on file for that install. You need to keep the receipt of purchase from your retailer, and if you've got a set of CDs/DVD with holograms, with a valid product key sticker on them, then who cares what product ID is actually entered on your server? In 18 months time you'll probably be running SBS "R2" anyway, and you'll need a new licence key
